The president of the Zambia, Hakainde Hichilema, urged his compatriots to stop checking their spouses’ phones, in a bid to stem the country’s divorce rates.
“We get married for love, we don’t get married to go check on each other, or to go pointing fingers,” Hichilema said speaking to local media on the sidelines of a public ceremony.
“Freedom means the responsibility to limit our freedom, not to tamper with the freedom of others.
Be tolerant, be understanding,” she added. According to official statistics, the country recorded more than 22 divorce cases last year alone, statistics that the president described as “unfortunate”. Lack of marital rights, adultery, gender-based violence, name calling and cruelty were among the main reasons people named in court filed for divorce.
